Hello, this post is gonna be devoted to explaining the french defense advance variation:

                                                                         THE FRENCH DEFENSE

PART 1: ADVANCE VARIATION

Intro of the french defense: The French defense is an opening that goes: e4 e6. And this is my favorite way of playing against e4 because I think the caro-kann is drawish, the Sicilian offers a lot of losing/winning chances and the double king pawn is keeping my opponent in his comfort zone, so I believe that this is the best way of playing against 1.e4, as stockfish does. But don't get me wrong the other moves are also good. Now, let's get started:

A-A discussion: Weaknesses and strengths

And then: We're gonna have a discussion about the weaknesses and strengths that you will usually have in your position.

First of all, the point of this opening is to give white the center and then counter-attack, white will usually attack on the kingside, and if black holds till the endgame, his pawn structure is winning. Black also might create some weaknesses on the queenside by pushing his pawns.

Your strengths: Pieces: dark-squared bishop (all your pawns are on light squares); knights (closed positions)

Pawns:  breakthroughs c5 and sometimes f6 can be really strong

Your weaknesses: Pieces: Light squared bishop.

Pawns: X (if f6, then e6 is weak)

Other: Space disadvantage.

                                                          B-Advance variation

The advance variation is very common at the lower level, and it's considered to be good too. But the reason it's not the most played among gm's is  that black gets a slight advantage

How to play against this? Well

And this is how I recommend playing against the advance.

Here are some games I recommend you analyze:

And finally, I am showing a game of Ginger GM, we've got to mention him he's the one that did the series here on chess.com and inspired me to play the french defense, and because of his great explanation, and fun repertoire, I can teach it!
