Do this to improve your chess rating this year as an adult chess player.
When improving your chess, "what to do" is not as important as "how" you do things.
Here are 4 things you should always be doing:
1. Study games from master and how they think through different sorts of problems.
How: Take your time to study different positions. If you get a book and the author shows you a diagram, take your time to think about how you'd approach the situation first, then keep reading.
2. Tactical training:
How: Low volume of puzzles. These puzzles need to be challenging, which means difficult but doable.
Don't rush. Solving only 4-6 in 30-45 minutes is okay. Extra points if you isolate the theme of the puzzles for the session.
3. Deliberate practice:
How: Play longer time controls. I recommend rapid or daily for an adult chess player.
Blitz or bullet will reinforce bad habits that you want to avoid. No distractions.
4. Study your games
How: Select 1-3 moments where you felt uncomfortable or didn't know what to do, don't consult the engine, think about how you treated those situations, and evaluate if you made a good move.
If your move was terrible, that indicates what you must focus on to improve your chess.
Each case is different; some things might vary depending on the player.
To improve your chess as an adult chess player, the key is to make things simple, fun and engaging.
There's no shortcut or easy path. Nor is it about training like a pro player 4 hours a day (unless your goal is to become good quickly).
