In chess, every move tells a story, not just about your strategy, but about you.

We all know the importance of studying your games. However, most people don't get the point of this.

Often, we study our games solely based on the moves. But there's a deeper layer to uncover – our internal triggers. What drives our decisions on the board? Is it cold, calculated logic, or unchecked emotion?

Consider a moment in your last game when you faced an unfamiliar position. How did you react? Did you feel anxious, leading to a rushed move? Or did you stay composed, analyzing the position logically? These reflections are crucial.

Logic Over Emotion – The Core Pillar:
At Premium Chess Coaching, we stand by a fundamental principle: Logic Over Emotion. It's not just about finding better moves; it's about understanding the 'why' behind your choices.

Deep Dive into Emotional Triggers

Start by identifying what emotions are at play during critical moments. Frustration? Eagerness? Fear? Recognizing these feelings is the first step in learning to control them. Remember, in chess, as in life, emotional mastery is key to making sound decisions.

Let's take an example.

When I was an under-2000-rated player, I noticed my tendency to rush under time pressure, leading to blunders. On introspection, I found that it was anxiety, not the position, that clouded my judgment.

By acknowledging this, I've started to work on staying calm and focused, regardless of the clock.

Practical Tips for Inward Analysis:

  1. blitzPost-Game Reflection: After each game, spend a few minutes reflecting on your emotional state during key moments. Also, think about what type of positions made you feel that way. Is there any pattern? What are the moments where you felt uncertain and made more mistakes? Why is that?
  2. blitzJournaling: Keep a chess diary. Note down not just your moves but also your feelings and thoughts during the game.
  3. blitzMindfulness and Meditation: Incorporate practices that enhance your emotional awareness and control.
