Weekend reflection from a chess coach

Like I said in my previous post, I want to share my knowledge and experience (day to day) as a chess coach.

In today's post, I will share some wins and reflections to help you improve your chess as an adult chess player.

🏆 Wins of the Week: It's an incredible week for our chess community! One of my clients executed a brilliant opening we prepared, checkmating their opponent in under 15 moves - a testament to their hard work and dedication.

Another client reached a milestone by achieving their peak rating and displayed remarkable skill, holding their ground against an opponent 100 points higher. 🚀

Even if my student lost, I consider this as a win since :
  1. He just crossed 1300, and these are his first games vs. 1400s.
  2. He got a winning position against him

With some tweaks, he will be able to beat the 1400s soon.

The other reason why I think this is a win is that as an adult chess player, he doesn't have a lot of time for chess, after all, his job is very demanding. However, he's putting his heart into this project. So shoutout to him happy.png

💡 Coaching Reflections of the Week:

In a recent session with Eric, a client from Canada, I noticed a common issue prevalent among adult chess players: prematurely stopping their calculations. He got a winning position; then he saw a fancy 2-move tactic. He made a sacrifice, but then he realized that in the 3rd move, the opponent could refute his idea, leading him to a losing position.

When calculating, stop it once there aren't forcing moves. Otherwise, you can get a nasty surprise. 🧠

Calculating multiple moves ahead is a vital skill in chess, as it helps anticipate your opponent's responses and plan your strategy effectively. To overcome this hurdle, focus on improving your visualization and calculation skills by practicing regularly.
