Screen Reader Now Compatible With Core Chess.com Pages
Chess is a game for everyone, and we believe that every player should be able to enjoy the full experience of playing, learning, and improving—no matter how they access the site. We've recently had the chance to sit down and talk with former Ambassador-level U.S. diplomat, global thought leader, and dynamic speaker Sara Minkara about online accessibility, how it helps everyone, and how to improve it:
We are proud to share meaningful progress toward making our site more accessible for visually impaired players. Over the past months, we have improved screen reader support across several core areas of the site. Our chessboard supports screen readers on both Android and iOS.
On web, we've also added a feature called voice mode that describes moves played out loud. Voice mode currently works on our Play page, and we're working on bringing it to other parts of the site.
While these are important steps toward building a more inclusive experience, we recognize it's not the end of the journey. We're actively working to improve accessibility across other areas of Chess.com.
Chess has always been a universal game. We hope to make Chess.com increasingly accessible so everyone can enjoy the game. We encourage you to share your feedback and help us advance our mission to bring chess to everyone!
