GCD Tournament Analysis - Part 1/5

We're doing a 90+30 tournament at general chess discussion. It's a round robin tournament with 5 rounds. The players are:

@magician - A 1970 OTB player. The pre-tournament favourite to win

@chesssblackbelt - A little lower than magician

@gmlightining2200 - An online player who's never played any time control longer than 30+0 before but is extremely strong online

@lonelybozo - Similar to lightning, except lower rated online

@macdek680 - An 1800 OTB player

@imreallysmelly - My sister, who's 1700 or so OTB. I definitely didn't change her username or anything nuh uh

Game 1: 

Lightning Vs Magician

I was pretty excited for this match up. Lightning is a very strong online player and 200 or so higher rated than magician online. However, magician has to be the favourite here as an experienced strong OTB player

Sadly there was no upset in game 1 in the end but that was all about to quickly change!

Game 2:

Lightning Vs Smelly

This is the match I was looking the most forward to when I created this tournament. My sister is extremely positional and lightning is extremely tactical. It's a clash of styles and while Smelly has the OTB experience, she's nowhere near what I think lightning is capable of achieving OTB 

Smelly missed some tactics as expected but was so dominant positionally that it didn't end up mattering. This was the first real upset of the tournament but definitely not the last! Unfortunately lightning is now on 0/2 in his first 90+30 tournament

Game 3:

Cbb Vs Magician

The 2 highest rated players battle each other early in the tournament. This game went on at the same time as the lightning Vs smelly game so I actually wasn't able to use my dgt board as it was being hogged by smelly. A common theme in this tournament. Not that I'm complaining or anything...

I'm very happy with the draw! It was a pretty low quality game with plenty of blunders from both sides. The game from the 2 highest rated players is probably going to be the lowest quality game in the tournament!
