Daily Puzzle Analysis 6/14/2025
Here is my analysis for today's daily puzzle!
Key Tactics: Mating Net, Mating Attack, Deflection, Discovered Check
At the start of the puzzle:
- Black is down two pawns.
- Black's king is out in the open, but White has no immediate threats on it.
- White's king is not too safe either; the g-file is currently open.
- Black's queen and bishop are pointing at the h2-pawn, which is only defended by White's king.
- White's king can escape via f1 to the e-file, where it is safe.
So, we should probably find a way to attack White's king for an advantage or a checkmate.
First, there are multiple reasonable checks in the position - 1. ... Qxh2+, 1. ... Bxh2+, 1. ... Qg5+, and 1. ... Rg5+. However, all of these allow White to escape to the safe haven on the e-file. After finding no continuation, I discarded these moves.
There is one other move that accomplishes something - 1. ... Qh3. This move prevents White's king from escaping to f1 and carries two threats with it: Rg5+ (not a current threat because White's rook can block) and Bxh2+ with a mating pattern:
This mating pattern is very important to the puzzle.
Back to 1. ... Qh3. However, I see that after 2. f4, White defends both threats (Rg5+ and Bxh2+). Additionally, White's queen now attacks Black's queen. So, this line didn't seem too promising to me.
I stared at the puzzle for some time, and I couldn't find anything better, so I played 1. ... Qh3, and as expected, White responded with 2. f4. However, at this point, I immediately saw the winning idea: 2. ... Rg4+, deflecting White's f4-pawn from blocking Black's bishop. And then, we can use our mating idea from earlier!
And the puzzle is solved! Excellent puzzle by @GuyLemieux!
I hope this helps, and have a nice Saturday!
