Chess on Cheers 2
This post is second in the series on Chess on Cheers. See the first installment here.
Have you ever used a computer or chess engine to cheat OTB? That is what happened in an episode on Cheers.
In season 8 episode 19 (Indoor Fun with Sammy and Robby), Robin Colcord (Roger Rees) challenges Sam Malone (Ted Danson) to a game of chess. Robin makes the challenge irresistible for Sam with a wager of a week's salary. Sam figures that he can use the winnings to buy back the bar. Sam accepts despite the fact that he does not know how to play chess. Using some transmitting equipment, Norm (George Wendt) and Pete (Peter Schreiner) sit in front of a chess game on Rebecca's computer. Sam takes on Robin with Norm and Pete's computer help. Sam explains away the transmitter and ear buds by saying he is listening to a sporting event.
The game is progressing well until the computer goes out, putting Sam at a disadvantage. Despite this, he makes a few moves that help him win without their assistance. However, Robin reveals that he knew Sam was cheating, so he teasingly awards him a penny, which it turns out is his weekly salary.
Has anyone used a chess engine to cheat against you? I can imagine ways to cheat online, but can this be done OTB? Have you ever wagered in a chess game?
