Background
Fantasy Island is an American fantasy drama television series. that originally aired from 1977 to 1984. The series starred Ricardo Montalbán as the mysterious Mr. Roarke and Hervé Villechaize as his assistant, Tattoo. Guests were granted so-called "fantasies" on the island for a price. In season 5, episode 16 (The Challenge/A Genie Named Joe), a wealthy shipping tycoon named Douglas Picard (Vic Morrow) seeks to claim Fantasy Island from Roarke. Picard arrives with a deed to the island that he legitimately acquired. However, Roarke does not intend to surrender the island so easily and initially offers to let an international tribunal settle it. Both knowing it would takes years to get the matter settled, Picard suggests a competition testing the mind, body, and spirit. Chess is selected for the mind competition, which is the focus here.
The Game
Tatoo announces that by mutual agreement each player has a 30-second time limit for each move. The game begins with Roarke (white) and Picard (black): 1. d4 d5. 2. c4. Picard declines the Queen's Gambit. Roarke considers this a wise decision. The scene then cuts to the position below and continues.
Discovered check, double check, and mate. Picard says it was a clever combination and congratulates Roarke for just defeating the eighth-ranked chess player in the world. Roarke calls Picard an excellent player but considers himself fortunate that he won.
