How I create brilliant king hunt chess puzzles!
Hello everyone, today I will be showing you how I created my latest brilliant chess puzzle.
A queen sacrifice checkmate is a very good place to start when creating a brilliant chess puzzle. Let's start with black’s king and pawn on g8 and g7, as well as a white queen on g1:
After 1. Qxg7+ Kxg7, we could add a pawn on e5 and a bishop on h4 so that we can play 2. Bf6+.
We now need to limit the king's possibilities. This is very convenient in our case, as a normal castle position with a rook on f8 and pawns on f7-h7 leaves black's king with just 3 squares: g8, g6, and h6.
If we add a rook on the 1st rank, 2...Kg8 is just met by 3. Rg1#, and we could also add a black knight on h6 to block the h6 square since it won't interfere with the queen sac nor the rook check (2...Kg8 3. Rg1+ Ng4 is just met by 4. Rxg4#; king added temporarily on b2 for playability)
This forces the king to move up, and now we have the start of a king hunt already. We could add a knight on e2 so that the knight can directly join the attack with Nf4+, and from there we could add 2 enemy pawns on e6 and e4 to block the king's path to the center. At this point, after 2...Kg6 3. Rg1+, 3...Kh5 is met by 4. Nf4# and 3...Kf5 is also met by 4. Rg5#, so black must play 3...Ng4. This will lead to 4. Rxg4+ Kh6/h5 5. Rh4+ Kg6 6. Nf4+ Kf5 (all forced).
Now we can add one of our pawns on e3 to stabilize the knight, and another pawn on h2 so that after 7. Rh5+ Kg4 8. Rg5+ Kh4, 9. Rg3# is a discovered checkmate. After the only other move 8...Kf3 9. Rg3+ Kf2, we could finally add in our own king on d2 to prevent any possible escape through e1, and suddenly, 10. Nh3+ Kf1 11. Rg1# is checkmate.
To complete the position, add in some props including a black queen and rook so that white is at a large material disadvantage at the start, and we have ourselves a forced mate in 11 moves that consist of a king hunt from g8 to f1 and a queen sacrifice on the first move:
Although the puzzle is long and forced, the analysis doesn't give the puzzle a brilliant move. However, it turns out that all we need to do is to change the ending of the puzzle a bit, namely make some of black's pieces block the king's only available squares when it gets to the last rank, and put white's king in a position so that now there are other tempting continuations.
In the end, the uploaded version is the puzzle above with reversed colors. Please note that, unlike chess compositions/studies, I prefer a decent degree of realism in these puzzles, so that is why there may be some unnecessary pieces in these puzzles. If this post gets 1000 views, I might do a tutorial on how I would create a brilliant chess study/composition. If you have any suggestions for a brilliant chess puzzle, you can send them to me through DMs on discord or join my discord server for examples of puzzles created by others.
Have a nice rest of your day and good luck in creating your own brilliant chess puzzles!
