The game of chess is a very difficult game, but in this blog, I will give tips to improve at bullet, blitz, and rapid ! I will be talking about knowing how to use your time, some tips to play that time control, and there will be a bonus section in bullet! I will also give you some training puzzles to help you sharpen your mind!

How to play in bullet:

When you play 1+0, you don’t have lots of time to think, so you would have to rely on your instincts. I would recommend you to think about 0.5-1 second per move. However, if you are in a difficult situation, I would say you should think about 1-5 seconds. If you are playing 2+1, I think you can think about 1-3 seconds per move, but. If you are  in a critical position, I think you should think about 5-10 seconds.

Tips:

Try not to think unless your instincts say that you are in a critical position ✅

Try to play tricky moves to make it harder for your opponent to make a move✅

Try to be able to finish the opening in 3-8 seconds✅

When your opponent offers a trade, decline if  taking does not favor you✅

Try to make traps if possible ✅

When your opponent is premoving for more than 10 moves, try to attack something so that your opponent will hang something while premoving✅

openings that you should play in bullet:

1. Fianchetto opening

This opening is one of the most popular openings in bullet. This opening is very good because you can premove easily. However, you will need to be careful of one thing trick when you are premoving which is:

This trap may seem stupid, but in my experience, this works 60% of the time  for the one who is making the trap! One way to prevent this is to do:

So what you do here, is you premove Nh3, so that we don’t fall for that dirty trap.

2. Danish gambit

I am not going to go in detail about this gambit, but this is a very good opening because it is harder for your opponent to make moves than you. What that means is that it is easier for your opponent to blunder something.

How to play blitz:

In blitz you also have to rely on your instincts, but you also have to think. In my opinion, blitz is the hardest time control to play because you have to know when to think or not to think. In 3+0, I think you should think about 2-5 seconds per move, but when you know that you are in a difficult position, I think you should think about 10-20 seconds. When you play 5+0, I would say thinking about 5-8 seconds might be sensible. However, when you are in a position where you think you might be in trouble or you think you have something, I would think about 15-35 seconds.

Tips:

Try to think in your opponent’s time✅

Try to make traps✅

When your opponent is playing a weird opening, don’t try to win immediately, just try to follow basic principles✅

When you are down more than 30 seconds, try to play fast and rely on your instincts ✅

Always try to be practical✅

when you are in time trouble, don’t panic and try play the best moves✅

How to play rapid:

When you are playing 10+0, I would think about 10-20 seconds per move, but if I knew that I was in a critical position, I would spend 30-1 minute in that position. However, if I was playing 15+10, I would think about 10-30 seconds per move. if I was in a critical situation, I would think about 1-2 minutes.

tips:

Don’t rely on your instincts unless you are in time trouble✅

Don’t play hope chess✅

Even in rapid, don’t multitask✅

Think on your opponent’s time✅

Don’t listen to anything when playing✅

Don’t play when you are tired✅

Try to play with a higher rated player than you✅
