This blog post is dedicated to the young, rising talent Hans Moke Niemann. As most people already know, Hans Niemann is a chess Grandmaster from the U.S. who surged in popularity after the famous cheating scandal and lawsuit in 2022. Although many people just know him from this, he is much more than just a controversial figure in the world of chess but an extraordinarily talented and promising player who is gaining attention from the media as a candidate of a far more prestigious title than "most controversial chess player".

Colodro, C.A. (2024). Hans Niemann scores 8/9 to win strong Grenke Open. [online] Chess News. Available at: https://en.chessbase.com/post/hans-niemann-wins-grenke-open-2024 [Accessed 12 Feb. 2025].

Born on the 20th of June, 2003, 22 year old Hans Niemann has achieved a range of accomplishments in a very short period of time. In 2016, just four years after his first tournament, Hans earned the Fide Master title, showing his dedication to chess and acting as a role model for aspiring beginners. Two years later in 2018, Hans earned the IM title and then the GM title 3 years later in 2021. During his youth, Hans Niemann experienced success in nearly all Junior tournaments he played in, tying for first in the 2016 U-18 North American Youth Championship (at the age of 13) and winning the 2021 U.S. Junior Championship.

Hans Niemann's success continued into his adulthood. His talent was recognised by the organisers of the Sinquefield Cup after receiving an invitation to the prestigious event in 2022. It was in this tournament where he outplayed and defeated Magnus Carlsen with the black pieces in a classical game (with a performance rating of above 2900 if my memory serves correctly), joining a group of elite players, but also prompting Magnus to leave the tournament. In 2023, Hans Niemann won The Tournament Of Peace in with 8/9 - three whole points ahead of second place and ahead of a field including many 2600 GM's including Ante Brkic and the legendary Ivanchuk. Following the completion of the tournament, Hans compared himself to the legendary Bobby Fischer in a Twitter post stating: "Two lone Americans up against the world, facing immeasurable odds".

In 2024, Hans Niemann emerged as a permanent 2700 'Super GM' and his status as one of the best chess players in the world became undeniable to many. Perhaps one of his career highlights was winning the Grenke Chess Open A (a reputable tournament which always attracts a strong field) with 8/9 ahead of a field of several GM's including Vladimir Fedoseev, Gata Kamsky and Arjun Erigaisi.

He played private classical matches containing large sums of money against GM's Anish Giri, Etienne Bacrot and Nikita Vitiugov, winning them all and gaining the respect of many GM's. Magnus Carlsen famously recognised Hans' strength and stated that he had an impressive understanding of the Italian Game. In the same year, he was a semifinalist in the 2024 Speed Chess Championship, defeating GM's Maxime Vachier Lagrave and Wesley So before losing to the eventual winner, Magnus Carlsen. Overall, 2024 was a very successful year for Hans, proving his ability to compete amongst the world's strongest players.

So far, Hans Niemann has looked unstoppable in 2025. He has further shown his mastery of short time controls after coming =1st in the 2025 World Blitz Championship Swiss (before being knocked out by eventual shared titleholder Magnus Carlsen) and achieving first place on chess.com in Blitz with a staggering rating of 3263. He is currently 2734 FIDE Classical, placing him in the top 20 in the world. At just 22, Hans has shown tremendous strength and improvement. These qualities place him as a serious contender for world champion, and I wouldn't be surprised seeing him in the next Candidates tournament.

To mark the end of this blog, I'd like to show you some of Hans' greatest games where he shows positional and dynamic understanding to defeat strong players.

The first game is the legendary game he played in the 2022 Sinquefield Cup against Magnus Carlsen. In this extremely complicated game, Hans found himself with a pawn advantage and superior piece activity and when the dust settled, he simply had too many pawns.

The second game is simply to show you why even the legendary Magnus Carlsen praises Hans' understanding of the Italian Game. In this brilliant game against an Iranian Grandmaster, Hans Niemann demonstrates brilliant Positional and dynamic understanding, sacrificing his queen and leaving his opponents' en prise to win a brilliant game.

Finally, the last game was played against an International Master when Hans Niemann was only 12. During the opening and middlegame phases, Hans outplays his opponent and gains a dominating position. I have decided to skip to move 56 of the game (click here if you wish to see the full game) as this is where Hans shows his superb technique to win one of the most difficult Endgames.

I hope you enjoyed my post about Hans Niemann. Hans Niemann is an extremely exciting young talent and I'm looking forward to seeing him fulfill his potential!
