The king
In chess, the king is the most vital piece, although it is not the most powerful in terms of movement. Each player starts with one king, and it can move one square in any direction: vertically, horizontally, or diagonally. The primary objective in chess is to checkmate your opponent's king, which occurs when the king is under threat of capture with no legal moves to escape. Even though it may seem vulnerable, the king can become an active piece in the endgame, participating in strategies to control the board and assist in the promotion of pawns.
