Positional play in chess is all about control, influence and development of your own as well as your opponent pieces. It is the art of using your pieces to control key squares and areas of the board, while also putting pressure on your opponent's pieces. It is simply improving your position to put pressure on your opponent pieces, finding a way to attack or simply trying to degrade the opponent's position.

One of the most important concepts in positional play is space.Space in chess simply refers to the amount of territory on the board your pieces control. In other words the more active pieces you have on the board the better are the chances of attacking your opponent and winning the game.In order to gain space, you should try to control the center of the board, as this is where most of the actions take place. You can also gain space by pushing pawns forward and exchanging pieces, as this will open up new lines of attack for your pieces.

Another important concept in positional play is piece coordination. This refers to the way your pieces work together to control key squares and attack your opponent's pieces.Good piece coordination is essential for creating threats and launching effective attacks. In order to achieve good piece coordination, you should try to develop your pieces out of the starting position and place them on squares where they can support each other and attack key squares.

The control of the weak squares is also crucial in positional play.A weak square is a square that is easily attacked by your opponent's pieces, while it is not well defended by your pieces.Identifying  and exploiting weak squares can give you a significant advantage in the game.

A good example of positional play is the strategy of the Ruy lopez opening. This opening aims to control the center and develop the pieces quickly, while putting pressure on opponent's position.

Now You will be wondering now that how will we improve our positional play and the answer is quite simple "Practice".By practicing, improving your concentration and ability to think more moves ahead of your opponent you will definitely be able to improve your positional play and improve your chances of winning.
