#9, Phi Kappa Blanca XXXII
- Tournament #9 : Phi Kappa Blanca, 10/27/90
- NCSU Student Union, Raleigh, NC
- TD: Robert Singletary
- Section: U1400
- Time Control: 40/90, G/30
This would be my first tournament playing 3 games without a loss. All my other cash finishes to this point included a bye at some point.
This one ended up being a very crazy, back and forth game. I ended up losing a piece for 2 pawns, but my opponent misplayed the endgame allowing me to win the piece back on the threat of promoting a pawn. I ended up accepting a draw prematurely and would have won had I declined and played it out.
Round 1, Game #22
Les had just started studying the King's Gambit and having played against him at the Raleigh Chess Club, I had a decent idea how to defend it.
Round 2, Game #23
Tom was, and still is, one of my favorite rivals and most common opponents. Most of our games took place in these U1400 sections and I recall most of our games being fairly competitive. Some of them being, as this one was, tactical slugfests.
