Vienna gambit is one of the most successful opening for white which I mostly play and win games. The Vienna gambit starts with 1.e4  e5 2.Nc3  Nf6 and 3.f4!?

Now if black takes the  pawn on f4 by playing 3.exf4 he is in big trouble. After black plays 3.exf4 we can strike the center with the move 4.e5 and blacks knight is attacked by our pawn on e5 as shown below. Now believe it or not blacks knight has only one move where it will be  safe and that is 4.Ng8. All the other squares that the black knight on f6 can move  are covered by whites finely placed pieces.

After pawn to e5 by white  some players playing black play 4.Qe7 pinning our e5 pawn to the king and also attacking our e5 pawn. Now we cant capture the knight on f6 because the black queen is pinning it so, we play the very best move 5. Qe2 defending our pawn on e5 and also removing the pin made by the black queen and now the knight on f6 is attacked as there is no pin on the e5 pawn.

So, capturing the f4 pawn is not the best idea for black after the move f4 by white. If black does not take the f4 pawn after the move 3.f4 he has to defend it as it is attacked by whites pawn on f4. There are 4 moves that defends blacks pawn on e5.The moves are shown below.

3.f4  d6

3.f4  Bd6

3.f4  Nc6

3.f4  Qe7

In my next blog i will tell you what happens if black defends the pawn on e5.You would be wondering where i found this information about the Vienna gambit.
