Is there money to be made playing Chess?

I've noticed recently that a number of coffee shops, bookstores, malls, and night clubs host intimate events that includes chess. Players usually wager $10 to $1,000 per game. Some with timers, others without. Is this taking a foothold throughout the U.S. or just in my city of Chicago?
