The Candidates 2024 are captivating so far , but this endgame should be one of the best and probably the most instructive !

The six time European Champion Anna Muzychuk faced the last year's challenger for the world title and the game did not disappoint ! After the French Defence exchange variation , the position seemed to be equal , but with very  beautiful middlegame play , Anna Muzychuk managed to get an advantageous endgame. The position that arose, with white to move, was the following.

Anna executed a decisive plan with Rd5 - Rd8, seemingly paving the way for a winning advantage for White. However, Lei countered with the surprising move Re8, sacrificing her Rook for the pawn in an attempt to defend the position with her two passed pawns.

However, the game was far from over at this point. White had a tremendous opportunity to secure victory if they could find the correct plan, although it proved to be extremely challenging. With only 16 minutes remaining to navigate the complexities ahead, Anna struggled to find the winning path. Can you spot the right plan for white ? ( Check the answer at the end ).

After delivering a check and capturing the f6 pawn, leaving only one pawn on the board, the position appeared to be heading towards a straightforward draw. However, a surprising turn of events unfolded as the game progressed. Let's examine the position and uncover a fascinating move for White!

Correct ! White played the move King to f3 !! And now what can black do ? If the pawn is pushed to g1 then checkmate , if the king moves then the pawn is gone. So black resinged. Right ?

However, Lei Tingjie played the fantastic (and only) move that split the point between the players. She played g1=N!, pushing her pawn to promote it to a knight. This move not only avoids checkmate but also introduces a new threat on the king.

Now, the position has reached a draw as White cannot make any improvements. Despite Anna's attempts to outplay her opponent with clever moves and ideas, Lei demonstrated great endgame technique and held the game comfortably.

The endgame proves to be extremely instructive in various positions, showcasing the strategic depth of both players. One of the most beautiful ideas emerges in move 52 where Anna missed a great chance. Let's explore the answer below.

Despite the intense battle and numerous opportunities, the game ultimately ended in a draw, demonstrating the resilience and skill of both competitors. The endgame, filled with instructive moments and missed opportunities, highlights the complexities and nuances of chess at the highest level.
