Chess notation is the universal language of the game, allowing players around the world to record, share, and study games move by move. In this guide, we’ll cover everything from the basics of files and ranks to special moves like castling and en passant.

1. Files & Ranks

  • Files: Vertical columns labelled a through h from White’s left to right.

  • Ranks: Horizontal rows numbered 1 through 8 from White’s side toward Black.

  • Square Names: Intersection of file and rank (e.g., e4, a1, h8).

2. Piece Letters & Pawn Moves

  • Piece Symbols:

    • K = King

    • Q = Queen

    • R = Rook

    • B = Bishop

    • N = Knight

  • Pawn Moves: No letter—just the destination square (e.g., e4, d5).

1. e4 e5
2. Nf3 Nc6

3. Captures & Special Symbols

  • Capture: Denoted by x (e.g., Qxe5 means Queen captures on e5).

  • Check: + (e.g., Be7+).

  • Checkmate: # (e.g., Qh8#).

4. Castling: Short vs Long

  • Short Castling (King Side): O-O

    • King moves two squares toward the rook on h1 (for White) or h8 (for Black).

    • Rook jumps to the square immediately next to the king.

  • Long Castling (Queen Side): O-O-O

    • King moves two squares toward the rook on a1 (for White) or a8 (for Black).

    • Rook jumps over the king to the square immediately next to it.

3. O-O O-O-O

5. En Passant

  • A special pawn capture that occurs immediately after an opponent moves a pawn two squares forward from its starting rank, and your pawn could have captured it had it moved only one square.

  • Denoted by writing the capturing pawn’s file, an x, the target square, and e.p. (optional).

1. e4 d5
2. e5 f5
3. exf6 e.p.

6. Pawn Promotion

  • When a pawn reaches the eighth rank, it promotes to Q, R, B, or N.

  • Denoted by adding = and the piece letter (e.g., e8=Q).

7. e7 e8=Q+

7. Ambiguity Resolution

  • If two identical pieces can move to the same square, add the originating file or rank (or both) before the destination.

    • Nbd2 (knight from b-file)

    • R1e3 (rook from first rank)
