Hello, I'm hiiiiiiiiiboux and in this post I will debrief my round 1 performance on the 2024 daily chess.com championship. I hope you'll get some instructive value from this post. Good read!

(P.S: I'm french so if I make english mistakes, feel free to tell me in the comments happy.png )

  • Study oppening

Yes, it's just 1.e4 !!

I won 6 games because the position after 1.e4 was so complex that some of my oppopnents simply couldn't find any correct move before the end of their time.

Targets remainning: 5

  • First win : masterpiece

My tournament started pretty well. I won the first real game with 100% accuracy. That's a lot.

I mean it wasn't really hard since it was oppening theory but I got some cool stuff in that game. I even got these classic mating combination wich I'm sure most of you will find the answer instantly.

  • Yes, it does happen in real games and not only in puzzle rush
    • Next target: the real challenge begins...
After that I had to  beat the best player of the group, who was rated 2000 elo in rapid a huge challenge in perspective. So I tried my best! During all the games I was exactly like this:
I don't know how but I won that game.
On move 6 stockfish suggests to take this pawn but hey I'm not doing that, 2 pawns up should be enough! If can give an advice, I'd say that 2 pawns and a healthy king is praticly speaking a better choice than taking a third pawn and taking the risk to loose due to a tactic. So play practicly.
  • A cool way to deal with the Queen's Gambit
Here I want to share with you a cool line against the Queen's Gambit: a6 !? . The idea of this move is to be able to take the c4 pawn and consolidate it after white attacks it. It has brought me a lot of success so you should defienetly try this on your own.

  • The return match against the boss of the group

I'm actually very proud of that game even though I didn't win.

My mistake is very instructive here, I captured with the queen claiming a Queen trade to get a rook endgame with a pawn up but... rook endgames are just drawish.

I thought that after Rd8 black will get control over the d-file but I didn't saw the simple but also only winning move Rd6! in this position.

Finally, that's how I ended the tournament with an overall score of 21.5 out of 22. Wish me good luck for the next round!
