The Woodpecker Method

Hi! This is hiyapat29 again! So in this post, I am going to talk about the book, I have been recently solving:- Woodpecker Method- By Axel Smith & Han Tikkanen.

So, we are first going to know,

1. What is Woodpecker Method?

Woodpecker method is a middle game book, And I think it was named by Hans Tikkanen. Because, The meaning of Tikkanen is "little woodpecker". Pretty cool. The Woodpecker Method is a self-proclaimed guide for chess players. The method is, solving 1182 puzzles on board.

2. How to solve it?

STEP: 1

Solve as many puzzles as you can manage in 4 weeks. Solving the exercises brings you to the end of your first cycle. You can use as much as time you want, but try not to use more than 4 weeks.

STEP: 2

After solving all the exercises, take a break from chess, a week if you need it.

STEP: 3

Solve the same set of puzzles again, but in 2 weeks.

STEP: 4

Repeat the steps 2 and 3 and repeat again. Aim to complete each cycle in half the number of days as the previous cycle.

3. The pattern of the book.

The book is divided into 3 parts.

1. Easy

This part consists of 222 easy puzzles. If these are challenging enough for you, then it would seem logical to use the end of this section as your cut-off point, after you will go back to the beginning for your second cycle. If, on the other hand, you find these puzzles rather easy, then start your set with them anyway!

2. Intermediate

This part consists of 762 puzzles. You will find. some relatively easy exercises in this section. They may also be some which you have considered hard, but remember, that the goal is not to score 100%, especially in early cycles.

3. Advanced

I would advise the majority of readers not to use the final section for training. Several of the positions are really tricky and most suitable for developing your ability to calculate, which veers slightly away from the main purpose of the Woodpecker Method.

Lets talk about the improvement after solving the Woodpecker Method.

1. We are likely to get very strong in middle games.

2. Your rating will improve by a large margin. ( around 1800 )
