Resetting checkmate the Aman Hambleton way

Reset checkmate is easily one of the most stunning and humiliating checkmate and Aman Hambleton is one of first people to do that. He executes it with an insane 20-move premove sequence. It may seem impossible to calculate that quickly, but he’s actually just executing a specific pattern.

Here's the pattern to do that (for white):

1. Qe2 2. Qg2 3. Rh3 4. Rf3 5. Qg4 6. Rf5 7. Qg6 8. Rf6 9. Qg7 10. Qf8 11. Rd6 12. Rd8 13. Qe7 14. Rd6 15. Qc7 16. Rd2 17. Rh2 18. Rh1 19. Qd6 20. Qd1#

NOTE: This sequence works as long as the opponent's King is NOT on g3.

Here's the pattern to do that (for black):

1. Qe7 2. Qg7 3. Rh6 4. Rf6 5. Qg5 6. Rf4 7. Qg3 8. Rf3 9. Qg2 10. Qf1 11. Rd3 12. Rd1 13. Qe2 14. Rd3 15. Qc2 16. Rd7 17. Rh7 18. Rh8 19. Qd3 20. Qd8#

NOTE: This sequence works as long as the opponent's King is NOT on g6.

It looks like an impossible grind to memorize every single one, but there’s a shortcut. I’ll show you how it's done.

Always remember: The rook always between the queen and the opponents king

Start by memorizing the first four moves. Then, apply the ladder checkmate technique until your rook reaches the sixth rank (or the third rank for Black). Finally, identify the three squares located exactly one square away from the rook, including diagonals. Like this:

Your objective is to first position the queen on g7 (or g2 for Black). Next, move the queen to the square directly above your rook that you have identified while moving the rook through the remaining two squares. Resume the ladder mate sequence until the rook reaches the sixth rank (or the third rank for Black). From there, bring the queen to c7 (or c2), shift the rook to d2, and reset it to h1 (or via d7 to h8 for the most efficient reset). Finally, move the queen to d6 (or d3) to return it to its designated position.
