What if chess were completely solved?

How does the Elo rating system work in today’s chess world?

What would happen to the Elo scale if chess were solved?

Why couldn’t Carlsen achieve a 2900 rating?

Imagine if chess were completely solved every move perfectly mapped out so that optimal play always led to a draw. The Elo rating system which has evolved from Fischer to Carlsen and now measures top players in the high 2700s and 2800s depends on human imperfection and razor-thin margins between wins and losses. In a solved game however any slight advantage would vanish, meaning even the best players would only achieve draws and the gap between human ratings and perfect play would become astronomical😀 , effectively breaking the Elo scale. This is also why even Magnus Carlsen, with all his brilliance, hasn’t reached a 2900 rating—because as players approach perfect play, the opportunity to score decisive wins dwindles, making that milestone nearly impossible to achieve in a game where errors are minimized to theoretical zero.
