Round 4

The 4th game of the 1921 WCM is rather quiet and subtle again. But it does contain a phenomenal positional move, 16.-e5!! by Capablanca himself, which is the most important lesson for me so far in this series. This move is exactly the kind of move, I am searching. Therefore, I am solemnly ready to announce it as the best move of the WCM 1921.

In this series, I will analyse all the games in the World Championship Match year 1921. First, I will play the game with guess a move -method. Then, I will prepare an analysis of the game, including some candidate lines in all positions. I will also compare my notes to Capa's own notes. All this will be done without the help of a computer. I try to do an abstract of Capa's playing style, and find some important things to learn from every game. Finally, I will check the lines with computer.

 SUMMARY:

The style of Capablanca - and the atmosphere of the whole 4th game - is quiet and subtle. Capa plays the QGD opening in a rather passive way, and therefore he soon finds himself in a difficult bind, where Lasker is launching a traditional minority attack. There is also the constant possibility of the white queen penetrating capa's 7th rank in the air. Yet I have the impression, that this is a rather usual course of events in an orthodox QGD. When the situation is in a crucial state, Capa finds a great move 16.-e5!! which is positionally a remarkable salvation, and I declare this move as the best move of the WCM 1921. Of course, all grandmasters look for these kind of moves, and surely many other masters would have found this move 16.-e5, too. However, this move is so principled and important, that I am still deeply impressed by it. Moreover, I have to mention that it is even more remarkable, that Stockfish 8 finds an even better, inhuman, amazing move, 16.-b5!!! in the position, which equalizes immediately. The rest of the game has nothing special, and the game ends quickly after only 30 moves in a draw.

THE LESSONS learned by me:

1. (4.1) AN IMPORTANT MIDDLE-GAME PLAN TO GET AN EDGE IS TO CLEAR THE (c-) FILE AND INFILTRATE THE 7TH RANK, EVEN WITH THE QUEEN AHEAD. Variation 11.-b6 12. Nxd5. Stockfish 8.

2. (4.2) LET US NOT FORGET THE GOOD OLD MINORITY ATTACK. 14. a5 and 15. a5. Lasker.

3. (4.3) YOU MUST CREATE WEAKNESSES IN OPPONENT'S PAWN STRUCTURE TO ATTACK THEM. 16.-e5. Capablanca.
