I Keep Losing the Same Way in Blitz
This is something I’ve noticed in my blitz games lately, and it’s been bothering me enough that I wanted to write about it.
I’m not getting blown off the board. I’m not falling into opening traps or hanging queens. Most of my games feel playable for a long time.
And then at some point, they don’t.
What’s frustrating is that there usually isn’t a single moment I can point to and say, “That’s where I lost.” It’s more like a slow shift. A few quiet moves go by, the position changes slightly, and suddenly I’m the one defending.
When I look back at these games, the mistakes are small:
– choosing a safe move instead of an active one
– trading pieces without thinking about the endgame
– leaving my worst piece bad for too long
None of these feel like blunders at the time. That’s what makes them hard to fix.
In blitz especially, it’s easy to think a position is “fine” and move on, but a couple of those decisions in a row add up quickly.
I’m starting to think that this is one of the biggest reasons improvement feels slow sometimes. Big blunders are obvious and easy to correct. These quiet mistakes just repeat themselves unless you really pay attention.
I don’t have a solution yet — just something I’m trying to be more aware of when I play.
Does this happen to anyone else, or is it just me?
