Abandon

Just finished a quick blitz game with a terrible blunder by my opponent, and the inevitable (it seems) abandoning of the game. I really dont understand why people would abandon a game? Why not just resign? All it does is waste 60 seconds extra of your opponents time, is it all down to a virtual face saving ride into the sunset exercise? What do you think?
