19-year-old phenom Magnus Carlsen now sits astride the world rankings at an impressive 2826 after his latest success - an undefeated 7.5-2.5 at the King's Tournament in Rumania this past May (average rating: 2740).

Despite this, he may already be glancing over his shoulder at the youthful Dutchman Anish Giri. Giri, who just turned 16 this past June, has himself scored a recent run of successes: Clear first at the Corus 'B' event in January; 1st with 4.5-.5 in Malmo in May; and just a half point out of first in the Dutch Championship. Having gained nearly 100 points since late last year and now rated 2672, his new challenge will be the main event at the traditional Biel Chess Festival in mid-July. It's a 10-player round-robin affair featuring players whose average age is under 19, with an average rating of about 2660.
