Why Play the Sicillian Defense?

I prefer not to play the sicillian defense. The point of 1...c5 is to defend d4. But 1...e5 also protects d4, and it also grabs one of the 4 middle squares, and stops the e- pawn from advancing to e6 which could later attack Black's Knight if it develops it to f6.
