
Doppelgänger chess
After completing a game yesterday, I can't help feeling a sense of déjà vu, that I've played it all before, even when the opening I used is a relatively new one. I am not referring to the same moves or position, but I've used the exact ideas from a totally different opening and the finishing kill is also similar to a previous game. More coincidences - the buildup after establishing a powerful knight outpost, the same piece configuration for White and Black (all heavy pieces plus knight for White versus all heavy pieces plus dark-squared Bishop for Black), White maneuvering to get an ideal setup for the kill and finally, a piece sacrifice on f6 to blow open the Black kingside.
Then it dawned on me where all this has occurred before. A game played in Adelaide 7 years ago. Here are the games -
