Planet Ivanchuk Question
Hi!
Haven't been blogging for a while. Been snowed in work - just completed a book edit, a magazine article, opening analysis for a project and some hectic coaching assignments (students involved in National Schools event). Finally found some free time.
Anyway, my Ivanchuk: Move by Move book was just published last month and I was very pleased to see a very positive review of the book. I do hope readers think likewise too!
Yesterday, I showed some chess friends (average ELO 2400+) a position from a game I considered putting in the Planet Ivanchuk Immigration Visa Questions section of my book but decided otherwise. I asked them to figure out how can White win from the following position after 31...Kh8.
Eventually, FM Ong Chong Ghee, who had stopped competitive chess for more than 10 years, showed the way. In fact, he had scored about 50% on the quiz questions in the book (I think I would have managed about 30% only if I see the positions fresh). So what was Ivanchuk's move which renders Black helpless? The answer is at the bottom of the page.
By the way, Everyman Chess has put one whole chapter (Introduction) of my book in pdf format free of charge at its site here. So if you want to know more about the mercurial genius, please visit the page.
