Messy Middlegame Attack

I'm rated 1632 while my opponent was 1875. I blundered as black, leading to a piece deficit. But I went on to mount a successful attack in the middlegame. Feel free to comment on it. A burning question I have: why doesn't white play d4 instead of d3?
