IN-FORM Patrick Kawuma beat a strong field of 19 players to claim the East African closed chess championship on Sunday at Lugogo.

En route to claiming the prestigious event, the 20-year old first year Makerere University student beat Kenyans veteran Ben Nguku, Atwoli Akello and drew with Ben Magana.

“I feel elated after winning here and beating some of the best players in the region,” Kawuma, young brother of FIDE master Stephen Kawuma said after the win. “The standards of chess in the country have gone up, but it’s on individual basis every player wants to win.”

Harold Wanyama finished runner-up while pace setter Haruna Nsubuga was third. Kenya’s Githinji Hinga, was fourth with Simon Gonza completing the top five.

This year’s event attracted ten players from Kenya’s leading club, Kenya Commercial Bank.
