Best books to improve your chess skills
So hello chess lovers,
I am here with my first blog which tells you about the perfect books which can greatly improve your chess skill. So lets put on our reading glasses and dive into this fine collection of chess books
Opening Play
This is a part of chess which is extremely important to work on for ambitious chess players. Many players have an approach of refraining from main lines and playing tricky sidelines. While this is ok for an hobby player i.e. a player who cannot spend much time preparing chess due to other commitments. But a huge mistake for players who want to pursue chess as professionals, the reason is that even if you succeed at the lower levels with this approach. The stronger players will punish you. Also it will leave a huge gap in your chess understanding. That is why I am recommending the GM repertoire series. In all 20+books have been published covering almost all the openings an ambitious player should know..
Middlegame play
There are many books which I would like to recommend for Middlegame play... the 1st and the most obvious choice for me is the 10 book series of GM Arthur Yusupov which covers all types of middlegames/pawn structures/ endgames etc. They are divided into three parts.. Build up your chess which consists of 3 books. Boost up your chess which also contains 3 books and finally The evolution which also consists of 3 books. After you have studied all this material you can go for the last book which contains a test of all 9 books combined. Then the second series I would recommend is Jacob Aagard's GM preparation. The third series I recommend is the dvoretsky-Yusupov chess school book. And last but not the least I recommend you to give the hardest test to your brain with the extremely complicated My Great Predecessors by none other than former world champion Garry Kasparov
Endgame play
This is a topic in which most club players struggle. They think that endgames are just too complicated and that better than spending so much time, money and energy on this is too just prepare the openings and middlegames so well that they do not have to get an equalish/ slight minus position. But this is a big mistake as you just cannot outplay stronger players in just 1 or 2 parts of the game, in most cases you should be able to outmatch or at least equalise your opponent in all parts of the game.
So for the players who are rated below 2000 I recommend Silman's endgame course as it is a good tool to build a solid endgame foundation. Once your level of endgame level is increased I recommend you to try your best to memorise (yeah memorise) all the endgames in the dvoretsky endgame manual (you may exclude tragic comedies) and keep on revising them.
And a parting request to all of you is that please buy the original stuff, Hope this blog helped you. Will soon be back with another one
