Sicilian Defense: The Staunton-Cochrane Variation
Hello everyone,
Today we are going to talk about the Staunton-Cochrane Variation of the Sicilian Defense. (1. e4 c5 2. c4)
This variation combines both the Sicilian Defense (1. e4 c5) and the English Opening (1. c4), which was invented by the English champion Howard Staunton. This is a variation that is an example of modern chess: the combination of openings.
Here are the goals for the Staunton-Cochrane Variation:
White:
1. Prevent black from breaking through with d5.
2. Seal up the center and direct the war to the kingside/queenside.
Black:
1. Break through with d5 at ALL COSTS, EVEN BY SACRIFICING A PAWN.
Let's look at this variation. I annotated it on the game.
Let's look at a game I played against a 2200. I played according to the book and won. I did not play well in the end because I had less than 20 seconds left.
Since it would take me forever to edit the chess game, I will say that 9. Be4 is the best, not 9. Bd3, which is impossible.
This is it for today! I hope you enjoyed this blog. Leave me comments/suggestions/criticisms as MUCH as you want! Thank you! Have a nice day!
