Bad News About The Octopus
I received a voicemail at about 2:00AM from Greg Nowak (the "Octopus") stating that he is in St. Patrick's Hospital and is about to undergo major surgery. I don't know what it's for, but he wanted me to spread the word in case anyone is wondering where he is. He is a truly good friend to me and many other people, so let's all keep our fingers crossed.
UPDATE (3/2/26)
I tried to visit Greg last week, but he was asleep. Today I finally caught him while he was awake, and I'm pleased to report that he's in good spirits and recovering well. His biggest worry is that some people might think he stood them up if he doesn't make it to his appointments (for Greg, that's a mortal sin). I reassured him that pretty much everyone in Missoula knows what's happening and that he doesn't need to worry.
He also authorized me to share that what happened to him was a "strangulated internal hernia." That does not sound pleasant.
UPDATE (3/12/2026)
Greg has been discharged from the hospital and is on the mend! He'll be back checkmating people in no time.
UPDATE (3/17/2026)
Today I got another message from Greg Nowak saying that he is back in St. Patrick's hospital after being discharged last week. I am not sure what the problem is, but it is likely related to the herniation for which he underwent surgery. I will pay him a visit tomorrow to find out more.
UPDATE (3/19/2026)
Greg's current ailment is gall stones, not any complications from his recent surgery (fortunately). He is awake and alert but understandably upset at being trapped in the hospital again. He is also reluctant to undergo yet another surgery, so I hope there are other options. I'll keep tabs on him.
UPDATE (3/25/2026)
Greg is out of the hospital and says that he feels pretty good. The doctors wanted to perform surgery, but he declined because of his age and his other recent surgery. He says he will be taking a short vacation from chess (I imagine it will be very short indeed).
