In Round 2 I faced Anthony Raelund, a young up-and-comer who competed in the recent Closed competition, and who trashed me in a game back in the spring when I was playing white. This time I was playing black, and though I did not play very well, I managed to win with a cheap tactical trick that gave me a strong material advantage. When I used to play volleyball, this is what we called "cheese," but I was happy to take it.

I decided to take a bye in Round 3 and get an easy half-point while I enjoyed dinner out with my girlfriend, finishing the day with 2.5 out of 3 points. Little did I know what the next day would bring . . .
