Long-forgotten vaiants Part 2: Ashtandrez chess
Have you ever wondered how many chess variants there are on Chess. com. You may only know King of the Hill, Crazyhouse or Chess 960, but there are more on Chess. com.
In this second part of a series (I hope) I will introduce you to 1 chess variants you may not have heard of.
This chess variant is called Ashtandrez (that means 8).
If you look the board you can see strange figures. There is a camel (that's real name), a dragon (real name: xiangqui horse), an elephant (2 kinds: angry and peaceful-not real name), a strange bishop (real name: ferz), and a ship. There is also a king with 8 (called royal 8).
How to move figures:
Camel is moving similar to the knight.
Xiangqui horse moves one square orthogonally and one square diagonally and it can't jump over other figures.
Ferz is moving diagonally but just for one square.
Ship is moving like the rook.
Elephant is moving like that:
Chancellor is moving like that:
Other rules are here: Each royal 8 has lives, checking the royal 8 times is checkmate. Checkmating the opponent's royal awards 10 points. Stalemating yourself awards yourself 10 points. You can drop a bishop and chancellor on the back rank. Pawns can move sideways. Capturing pieces earns points. The player who obtained the most points at the end of the game is victorious. Pawns promote to a rook on the 8th rank.
