The Longest Day
. . . the arrival of Summer!
A few miles from here is the ancient site (3100 BC) of Stonehenge, and this morning it will have been overrun with people from all over the world, waiting for the sun to rise. . . the Summer Solstice.
The sun is at its Northernmost point and so, here in the Northern hemisphere begins the longest day, to be followed by the shortest night. From the centre of Stonehenge, on this day, at dawn, the sun rises over the Heel Stone and a shaft of light connects with the Slaughter Stone and the Alter Stone in perfect alignment:
As the sun spirals its longest dance,
Cleanse us
As nature shows bounty and fertility
Bless us
Let all things live with loving intent
And to fulfill their truest destiny
