HOW TO EXPLOIT SMALL ADVANTAGES

Today I will talk about a very interesting topic in chess and it is about how to exploit or how to take advantage of a small advantage to turn it into victory.

Over the course of a high-level game, you often reach midgame or endgame situations in which neither side has a considerable advantage of direct victory over the opponent, which could be any of these: pawns, pieces, material, attack on the king, passed pawns in the end etc. If not, for the most part, there are small positional improvements such as: control of an open file, better pawn structure, control of central squares, etc.

These topics are not so easy to handle, since you must be very precise when drawing up game plans, an exact calculation when analyzing our plays together with the possible responses of the rival in order to avoid any type of countergame , and finally, among others, a broad domain of strategic concepts that will depend on the type of position being played. In this article I will present some positions in which high-level players correctly took advantage of the small advantages that were presented in their respective games, and thanks to this they were able to achieve victory.

Through these examples it was shown that it is not so easy to realize this type of advantages. In training, this must be widely studied and practiced, because when a player reaches a high level the difficulty of the games is not usually the same as when he was in the intermediate stage, and these cases occur quite frequently. The games are longer, the opponents are more solid, the level of competition is stronger, etc. Therefore, you must have knowledge and mastery about this concept and the topics that arise.
