The FIDE President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov has used his executive powers to cancel the rematch between Magnus Carlsen and Vishy Anand. Carlsen's next opponent will be a Presidential wild card, the identity of whom is unknown. Anand qualified for a shot at regaining the title after dominating last month's Candidates tournament staged at Khanty Mansiysk.

In a statement issued from the Chess City which Ilyuzmhinov has had built in his home town of Elista, the President declared that a rematch would: "take the chess world back to the dark days of Botvinnik" a reference to the rights to a rematch that Botvinnik had enshrined in the world championship statutes and which enabled him to regain the title from Vasily Smyslov in 1958 and from Mikhail Tal in 1961.

Magnus Carlsen will soon reach 3000 on the rating list" said Ilyumzhinov "and that means he is ready for the ultimate test"
