Even the best of us make mistakes, and chess grandmasters are no exception. Here are some legendary blunders from the highest echelons of the chess world:

  • The Immortal Wrong Move :

In 1925, Adolf Anderssen, a former World Champion, famously blundered his queen in a seemingly winning position against Jean Dufresne. This blunder became immortalized as "The Immortal Wrong Move" due to the sheer dominance Anderssen had on the board before his mistake.

  • The Hanging Rook :

This blunder, committed by grandmaster blunder-prone Alexander Ivanov in 1994, lives up to its name. Ivanov left his rook completely undefended, "hanging" for his opponent to capture with ease.

  • The St. Louis Swindle :

In 2016, reigning World Champion Magnus Carlsen fell victim to a brilliant, yet somewhat cheeky, tactic known as the "St. Louis Swindle." Carlsen, perhaps overconfident, fell for a clever trap set by Fabiano Caruana, ultimately losing the game.
