The Arimaa Spring now in Summer

Aug 1, 2011, 2:34 PM |

It's already been a busy year for the Arimaa community what with the human and computer championships and the annual Challenge match. Now it's summer, and the community is coming together for two cool, refreshing online events.

In the past we had The Mob vs. The One matches. We would take the reigning world champion and tell him to try and fend off a horde of Arimaa warriors who discussed every move as they made them. Understandably, The One found that rather tough going! So this time we thought we'd split the community down the middle, and tell them to have an almighty bust up in what should be one of the greatest Arimaa games ever. The Mob vs. The Gang is still only in move 2, but the little grey cells are already working overtime. You can join either the Mob (USA) or the Gang (Rest of the World). Or if you like you can just sit back and let my blog wash over you as I keep you fully up to date with all the latest.

And then there's the World League that started today, on Monday August 1. Four teams, the Rockies and Atlantics representing the west and east of North America respectively, Europa, and the Ring of Fire representing the Pacific Rim, will battle it out to see who will be crowned this year's champion. Last year the Ring of Fire blazed a trail to win both the League and its sequel. Let's see what the other teams will bring to the table this time around. The Atlantics might not be the most highly-rated team, but their commitment earned them a respectable place on the leader board last year. The Rockies star the perennial heavyweight Fritzlein (Karl Juhnke) and Europa is home to the current world champion chessandgo (Jean Daligault). But don't let that deter you from taking part: The rules are written so that newcomers and veterans alike get a good crack of the whip. Stay tuned for more developments in the first round...
