Bishop and Pawn vs Bishop: Some basics you need to know (+ Video)
Hey chess people. We have studied here some endgames theory, but as I remember we’ve never looked at Bishops endgames. In this post we are going to study some basic but extremely important theory about Bishop and Pawn vs Bishop.
The ideas we’ll see here are easy to learn, but useful at the same time: they should help to win some almost balanced games (or to get a draw in some difficult positions). Without further delay, let’s get down to business.

Important Notes:
- In these endgames, if the weak side can block the pawn with the King in an opposite colored square than the enemy bishop, there will be an easy draw.
- If the defensive King can’t bock the pawn, then the strong side has some good possibilities to win using the bishop to make sure the defensive bishop stops controlling the pawn.
- However, if the weak side can get the Back-Side Opposition, very often that’s enough to get a draw.
- But Back-Side Opposition is not going to work if one of the diagonals crossing in front of the pawn is too short (3 or less squares).
