Charming Chess Games: Timman vs Van Wely (+ Video)
Today we study a great game: Jan Timman vs Loek Van Wely, Breda 1998. I don’t want to spoil anything; I’ll just say that it's a miniature with several sacrifices and a strong attack on the Castled King.

Lessons from this game
- Some sacrifices are playable even when they are not clearly winning (see double exchange sacrifice). Of course, they are tougher to evaluate, very often they involve some positional concepts (like King Safety or Pawn Structure) as compensation for the material down.
- Move 19.e5!! is a very instructive pawn sacrifice to clear e4 for Knight and Bishop. It’s interesting how these minor pieces were decisive later in the attack.
- Sacrifice 20. Bxh6!! is another move we should highlight. White pieces are back in the 2nd and 3rd ranks and still, it works (they have clear and fast access to key squares attacking the King).
Good luck to everybody, and take care!!!
Stay home as much as possible.
