Double Bishop Sacrifice in a Masterpiece (+ Video)

Hi chess lovers. Learning patterns is always useful in this game because we can use that accumulated knowledge to assess and make decisions in our games. This time we are going to analyze a typical and common sacrifice for the attack to the castled King: Double Bishop Sacrifice (also known as Lasker’s Sacrifice). We’ll analyze the masterpiece Nimzowitsch vs Tarrasch, 1914.

Without further delay, let’s get down to business (a long time without saying that ).

When could Double Bishop Sacrifice work (assuming Black pieces)?

  • If we have the two bishops attacking g2 and h2 pawns
  • If the Queen can go to h4 and the Rook can lift and go to the kingside over some rank (probably 3rd, or sometimes 4th)
  • If there is not Knight on f3 and there is probably an enemy Rook on f1 (it helps to block the King)

Then, we should analyze the double sacrifice, it’s probably working, but the concrete calculation has always the last word.

A quick look at Champions Showdown Chess 9LX

Nakamura and Carlsen both won this nice tournament. I could follow most of the games this time, I’m really starting to like Chess960 . I even recorded a video the first day after the game Kasparov vs Carlsen, probably one of the most expected battles in this contest. These are the highlights of that game:
