Hello chess friends. Today we analyze a very interesting topic: Hanging Pawns, and how to play when we or our opponent has this structure. We’ll study typical plans for both sides, general ideas, and a very instructive example by Garry Kasparov.

Summing Up

The side with Hanging Pawns:

- Wants to play the Middlegame

- Has a lot of potentials always threatening d5 or c5

- Can start an attack on the kingside

- Can use the plans f5 or a5

The side playing against Hanging Pawns:

- Wants to play the Endgame

- Should attack very strongly these pawns

- Wants to force some inaccurate advance (c5 or d5) by playing b5 or f5
