Hi everyone. In this post we are going to see a typical sacrifice against the castled king. Actually it’s a double bishop sacrifice, and the idea it pursues is to destroy the pawn structure of the castling giving the two bishops, so queen and rook will have open and direct lines against the enemy king. Let’s study a classic game where Lasker beat Bauer using this idea.

In this video I analyze this great game: Lasker vs Bauer, Amsterdam 1889

As this is a typical attack pattern, you should know some characteristics of the position that will help you to decide if the sacrifice works or not:

  • There must not be knight at f6 (f3) protecting h7 (h2)
  • Pawns in the castling should be in the base
  • Bishops should be pointing g7 and h7 (g2 and h2)
  • Queen should be able to go to the h file
  • Rook also able to go to the kingside

Those are the main conditions. Usually if they are accomplished on the board, the sacrifice should work. However, you should always calculate and evaluate it by yourself. Chess world is too big, and each position has its peculiarities.
