Tactical Themes: Extraction of the King (+ Video)
Hello Caissa’s addicts. In this post we’ll talk about an interesting Tactical Theme we call Extraction of the King. We’ll see here some fantastic puzzles, but first we need to talk a little about some theory.
Extraction of the King: It happens when a side sacrifices some pieces to attract the enemy King outside (in general towards the center), away from his fortress, where he will be much more exposed and therefore it will be much easier to mate him.
Analogy with real life
In a real life battle, if the king is in the castle it should be very difficult to kill him. But if by some way you can get him out of his fortress then it’s much easier to capture him. That’s exactly what happens in the chess board when we sacrifice pieces to do an Extraction of the King. I just wanted to mark out this analogy, because it doesn’t happen like this with other tactical themes. I find that very interesting.
