The Verdict on the Queen's Gambit Part One (QGA)

If you take a look at my statistics, you will clearly see that I favor 1.d4 to all other openings.  In my first post, I want to take a look at the Quuen's Gambit.

      QGA (2...dxc4)

In master games this is the third most popular response, favored by Vassily Ivanchuk. This approach is simple: I will reach active piece play at the cost of having a central pawn minority.

The most played, and in the past it was considered neseccery to play this so as to prevent e5. Now the main line goes 3... Nf6 4.e3 e6 5. Bxc4 c5 6.0-0. However, there has been an explosion of interest in the move 3...a6!? Now the continuation 4.e4 seems best for white.

This line is adored by Garry Kasparov, recommendation enough for most players! Now 3...e5 seems best, and after 4.Nf3 exd4 5. Bxc4! play is unclear.

The old variation. Now, once again, 3...e5 4. Bxc4 exd4 6.exd4. This is the third most popular move.

Thanks guys, hope you enjoyed my first ever article. I'll be back with more soon.
