Should an adult improver play bullet & blitz?

Bullet and blitz are by far the most played game variants (time controls) online. At the same time, those two are the most dangerous for every player trying to improve. It is easy to realise that the one who is trying to improve needs to spend time thinking longer. However, many of those keep playing bullet and blitz, and then continue to ask why it is so difficult to improve, how long it takes, and how many games they should play in order to get some rating points.

In this video I am trying to get behind the psychology of such players, going into their motivation and attitudes towards chess itself. Despite of the attempt, the author is not paying attention to the players who use bullet chess only for fun, without any idea to improve their skills. At the same time, there is no claim that bullet is not fun to play, but only that it doesn't have much to do with the usual (normal) chess, and that - for the one who seeks to improve their game - playing bullet (and possibly blitz) wont help.

Here are the chapters, with the themes/claims mentioned:

  • Bullet & love for chess
    - it is easy to play bullet, the lucky one wins (like a lotery): the quickest and effortless dopamine
  • Quality of a bullet game (1)
  • Quality of a bullet game (2)
  • Reasons to play bullet
    - you get a lot of wins in short time span
    - you don't put much effort into it
    - chess is a way to get quick satisfaction
    - bullet chess is stripped off of joy of playing: there is only joy of winning
    - one is seeking to improve speed instead of focusing on chess itself
    - bullet on lower level is just a gamble (there is no time to think)
    - there is no way to improve one's chess skills by gambling
  • Chess improvement & bullet
    - there is no connection between bullet chess and normal chess strategy
    - the habit of playing without thinking (in the bullet) only harms your normal chess potential
    - bullet chess strategy is based on the strategy of pre-moving, and strategy of provoking the opponent to consume more time
  • Benefits of playing blitz
    - good for busy chess players who don't have enough time to play longer (more serious) games
    - the ultimate testing-ground for any of the openings one might wish to explore
  • Conclusion
    - no benefit in playing bullet
    - blitz is good for the openings only in case you are at least an intermediate level player
    - rapid (with an increment) is always prefered cause you have more time to think
    - bullet and blitz are (by far) the most played game variants (time controls) online
